PGI Chandigarh sanctions 31 assistant professor posts in 3 critical departments
Chandigarh: In response to the shortage of doctors, the premier institute- Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh has given approval for the establishment of 31 Assistant Professor positions in three critical departments.
The creation of assistant professor positions is a significant step towards improving the quality of patient care. These positions will provide additional support to other doctors and healthcare professionals, allowing them to focus on providing the best possible care to their patients.
By creating additional assistant Professor posts under the approval of the Centre, PGI would be able to improve their efficiency and reduce the workload of other professors.
The institute has sanctioned the post mentioned above in three critical wings: Hospital administration, histopathology and the division of paediatric gastroenterology & hepatology under the Department of Gastroenterology.

The Department of Histopathology at PGIMER is a centre of excellence equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory instruments and is well-recognized both regionally and nationally in pathology. With 10 well-qualified and dedicated faculty, junior and senior residents, and research and laboratory personnel, the department offers a full range of diagnostic services and has extensive and diverse research programs.
The department's ability to operate efficiently is hindered by the absence of medical staff, as several positions remain unfilled due to limited space and an insufficient number of operation theatres. As per the data shared by the tribune, around 260 new faculty positions have been created in the past four years in the Department of Histopathology.
Similarly, the institute has sanctioned additional assistant professor posts to address the shortage in Hospital administration since it plays a crucial role in patient care by managing the various non-clinical aspects of healthcare facilities. Their responsibilities are essential for the smooth operation of the hospital and the overall well-being of patients.
The Department of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology is working with only two faculty members which is woefully insufficient since the department over the last four decades has been fulfilling the mandate of PGI of Service to the Community, Care of the Needy and Research for the Good of all. The department has been providing the highest quality affordable patient care to the community.
The department imparts service in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology for adults, Paediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology for children and Community Gastroenterology for service in the community. Hence, the creation of an additional assistant professor post was necessary for the department.
As per the Daily, there is a proposal to establish one position for a Senior Resident and six positions for Senior Demonstrators across different departments. The Senior Demonstrator positions will be allocated as follows: two positions in the Paediatric Genetic Metabolic Unit Laboratory, two in Paediatric Haematology Laboratory, APC, one in Paediatric Allergy and Immunology Laboratory and one in Translational and Regenerative Medicine.
