Quack who is Class 8 dropout arrested in Ganjam

Berhampur: A 40-year-old man, a class VIII dropout, has been arrested in Odisha’s Ganjam district for impersonating a doctor and illegally treating patients without any valid license or medical qualifications.

The accused, a resident of Bishnupur village in West Bengal’s 24 Parganas district, had reportedly been running an unauthorised clinic at Gandhi Chowk in Sana Aryapalli village. The quack was reportedly been treating patients and selling medicines — all without a valid license or medical education.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Aryapalli Marine IIC Bidya Bharati Nayak raided the clinic. During the raid, the officers found the fake doctor examining a patient with a stethoscope. When asked to produce his medical credentials, the quack failed to show any valid documents.

Upon interrogation, the fake doctor reportedly confessed to the crime. He revealed that he dropped out of school after failing Class VIII and left home to work in Madhya Pradesh. There, he gained experience while working in a clinic owned by a Bengali doctor. He later moved to Aryapalli in 2021, where he set up his own clinic. Authorities mentioned that the doctor was collecting hefty sums from unsuspecting patients.

Police seized forged medical certificates, equipment, and medicines worth over Rs 1 lakh from the clinic in the presence of witnesses. A case has been registered against the fake doctor, and he was produced before the court later in the evening.

According to TNIE, the IIC said the investigation is underway to ascertain how long the accused was operating as a fake doctor. Besides, police are verifying the genuineness of Sarkar’s Aadhaar and voter cards, which he had prepared during his stay in Aryapalli. All such clinics operating within the jurisdiction of the Marine police station would be verified, she added.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that while qualified doctors spend years studying and gaining experience, a 62-year-old woman with only a Class 12 education allegedly posed as a doctor and treated numerous patients at an illegal clinic she was running from a rented house on Irur Road in Alathur taluk.
