Rainbow Hospital Controversy: Medical Council Summons Doctor Who Allowed YouTuber to Cut Newborn's Umbilical Cord
Chennai: In the latest update regarding the Rainbow Hospital controversy, where a YouTuber entered the operation theatre of a private hospital and cut his newborn's umbilical cord, the Tamil Nadu Medical Council (TNMC) has decided to summon the doctor involved in the case, TNIE has reported.
The officials at the State Medical Council informed the Daily that they sought an explanation from the gynecologist and obstetrician who conducted the caesarean. Action from TNMC comes after they received a complaint from the Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services (DMS) about the incident.
Speaking to the Daily, the officials informed that even though the doctor sent a written explanation, she would be summoned in person this week for an explanation.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported DMS recently barred the Chennai-based Rainbow Hospitals from all patient care activities for 10 days for allowing the YouTuber inside the operation theatre and permitting him to cut the umbilical cord of his newborn baby and record it. Later, the YouTuber Mohamed Irfan posted the video of his wife's delivery. Apart from barring the hospital from providing any medical services for ten days except for antenatal care, the authority had also slapped on it a fine of Rs 50,000.
DMS Dr. J Rajamoorthy took this action against the hospital for violating the norms of the Tamil Nadu Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010 by not adhering to the sterility protocols. The DMS had issued a show-cause notice to the hospital a day after the YouTuber Mohamed Irfan posted the video of his wife's delivery. A complaint was also lodged with the Medical Council against the Gynaecologist, who conducted the surgery on the YouTuber's wife.
In the video, the lady doctor could be seen asking Irfan if he wanted to cut the umbilical cord and instructed her associates to give him a pair of gloves. However, Irfan had removed the video later.
As per the latest media report by The New Indian Express, the Medical Council has now summoned the doctor concerned seeking her explanation into the matter. Commenting on this, a TMC member told the Daily, "Based on her explanation, action will be taken. If required, the entire team who conducted the delivery will be called up for inquiry. They shouldn’t have allowed a person without medical training inside the operation theatre."
The Daily has reported that DMS also recommended the council to take action against the doctors who allowed the YouTuber inside the operation theatre with a camera.
