Renowned oncologist Dr Dattatreyudu Nori awarded Padma Bhushan
Hyderabad: President Droupadi Murmu awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honor, to eminent Indian-American radiation oncologist Dr Dattatreyudu Nori in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the field of medicine.
Dr Nori received the award at an investiture ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday.
Widely regarded as a pioneer in oncology, Dr. Nori has played a transformative role in advancing cancer treatment over a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, news agency UNI reported.
He served as Professor and Chairman of Oncology and Director of the Cancer Centre at the prestigious Cornell Medical Centre, New York, and is credited with developing several innovative cancer treatment techniques that have significantly improved survival rates worldwide.
Born in a Telugu family in Mantada village, Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh on October 18, 1947, Dr. Nori completed his medical education at Kurnool Medical College before obtaining his postgraduate degree from Osmania University in 1976.
Dr Dattatreyudu Nori later joined the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in the United States, where he made landmark contributions to cancer research and treatment.
Despite his global accomplishments, Dr. Nori maintained close ties with India and actively contributed to strengthening cancer care infrastructure in the country.
He played a key role in the establishment of the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute in Hyderabad and served as its founding member and Chief Scientific Advisor.
Dr. Nori has also served as a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), advising on cancer treatment strategies and guidelines for developing nations.
He has authored over 300 scientific papers and four books on oncology and has mentored more than 300 medical professionals who now occupy leadership positions in healthcare institutions across the world.
Currently serving as Senior Advisor to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre-Chennai, Dr. Nori is also an advisor on cancer care to the Governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
His contributions have earned him several prestigious national and international honours, including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in the United States, the Padma Shri in 2015, the American Cancer Society's "Tribute to Life" Award, and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre's "Most Distinguished Physician Award."
In 2017, the Indian Cancer Congress conferred upon him its highest recognition, the "Living Legend in Cancer" award, acknowledging his outstanding contributions to cancer care in India and globally.
The Padma Bhushan honour is a recognition of Dr. Nori's lifelong dedication to advancing oncology, improving cancer care and mentoring future generations of medical professionals.
