Renowned Surgeon Dr S R Koulgud passes away at 93

Not NMC, but State Can Provide In-Service Reservation

Dharwad: Dr. Shesharao Rangarao (SR) Koulgud, a distinguished senior surgeon and respected member of the medical community, passed away on Thursday at the age of 93. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Dharwad, leaving behind a legacy of medical excellence.

Dr Koulgud is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. Born in Guledgud, a town in the Bagalkot district, Dr Koulgud had an early education in Pune before pursuing his medical studies at Seth GS Medical College, Pune, where he earned his Master of Surgery (MS) degree in 1961.

Dr. Koulgud's medical career was marked by a long tenure as a professor of surgery at the Karnatak Medical College (now KMC-RI) in Hubballi, where he imparted knowledge and guidance to generations of young doctors. His passion for teaching and mentoring medical students was not confined to Hubballi. He also served at several other prominent institutions, including medical colleges in Ballari, Mysuru, and SDM Medical College in Dharwad.

After retiring from his academic career in 1997, Dr Koulgud continued to serve the community through private practice. He also became a visiting surgeon at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Dharwad.

According to TOI, apart from the medical profession, Dr Koulgud was actively involved in spiritual activities and was the president of Dharwad Taluk Brahman Sabha. The members of the medical fraternity and other social and religious organisations visited his residence in Malamaddi and paid their last respects. His last rites were performed on Thursday evening.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that Dr Shirley Vasu, Kerala’s first woman forensic surgeon and a towering figure in the field of forensic medicine, passed away at the age of 68 following a cardiac arrest. She collapsed at her residence in Mayanad and was rushed to Kozhikode Medical College, but could not be revived.
