RG Kar Medical College intern found dead under mysterious circumstances
Kolkata: In an unfortunate incident, a 23-year-old intern at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was declared dead on Friday at the hospital's critical care unit. A preliminary post-mortem report mentions antidepressant drug overdose as the cause of death.
It's unclear if the intern committed suicide or if any foul play played a role in his death. However, police have registered a case of unnatural death and an investigation is underway to determine the reason behind his death.
The intern was doing his internship at the state-run medical college after completing his MBBS. He was staying with an uncle at Nimta in North 24 Parganas.

The incident came to light on Thursday when the intern's uncle did not hear anything from him in two days. After being suspicious, the uncle went to the house and knocked on the door. He saw that the door was locked from inside, and he tried to contact the intern but failed. As a result, he broke the door open and found him lying unconscious in the room.
Following this, he was rushed to the hospital's emergency ward where the doctors admitted him to the general medicine ward. Later, he was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after his condition deteriorated rapidly. After battling for five hours, the intern passed away at 12.30 am on Friday due to cardiac arrest.
“He could not be saved from repeated cardiac arrests, which seems to be because of a psychiatric drug overdose. Despite all resuscitative efforts for over five hours, we could not save him,” an official at the hospital informed The Telegraph.
While investigating the case, the police discovered that the intern was suffering from depression for nearly 1.5 years and was under psychiatric treatment. He was prescribed medicines for his depression.
“His uncle and others who brought him also carried a prescription and some strips of psychiatric medicines. After speaking to them, we learned that he was under psychiatric treatment,” said a doctor.
