RIP: Renowned urologist Dr Laxman Prabhu passes away after succumbing to cardiac arrest while on duty
Mangaluru: While attending to a patient on duty, renowned urologist, professor and head of the Urology Department at Kasturba Medical College Hospital (KMC) Dr G G Laxman Prabhu suffered cardiac arrest and unfortunately passed away at the age of 60 on Friday here.
The incident took place a week ago when Dr Prabhu experienced a cardiac arrest while on duty at KMC Hospital Mangaluru following which he was admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU). Although he received treatment from colleagues who did their best to provide proper care, Dr Prabhu unfortunately passed away on Friday morning without showing any signs of improvement.
His death was mourned not only by his family and friends but also by the medical community and the students to whom he was an excellent mentor, doctor and a good human being who looked after his patients with care. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Dr Prabhu was recognized for his expertise in general urology, urolithiasis, andrology, urodynamics, recon-urology, urogynecology, and endourology.
He had worked as a specialist in Urology for 36 years and was greatly respected for his eye for detail, accuracy of diagnosis and empathetic treatment of patients.
He began his career at KMC, Manipal as an assistant professor and then became an associate professor at KMC Mangaluru in 1995. In 2004, he achieved the prestigious position of full professorship. In 2012, he was given the responsibility of heading the newly established Department of Urology at KMC, TOI reports.
Even after his retirement in 2023, he continued to lead the department as per KMC's post-retirement engagement policy. Throughout his remarkable 30-year tenure at KMC, he dedicated 11 years to serving as the head of the Department of Urology.
Dr. Prabhu served in various esteemed positions, including council member and president of the Karnataka Urology Association, secretary of the Association of Southern Urologists, and council member of the Urological Society of India. He also contributed significantly to the former IMA DK branch, now known as IMA Mangalore, as secretary. He was elected as secretary of the Urological Society of India (USI) in 2022.
He completed his MBBS from Mangalore University, Karnataka, India in 1986, MS in General Surgery from Mangalore University, Karnataka, India in 1989 and MCh - Genito-Urinary Surgery from Mangalore University, Karnataka, India in 1992 and DNB in urinary surgery in 1993.
