Senior resident hit and run case: 21-year-old medico arrested
New Delhi: Days after a senior resident doctor and an operating theatre technician were killed in a hit-and-run accident in Najafgurh, a 21-year-old medical student was arrested from Haryana by the Delhi police in connection with the incident.
The medical dialogues team had earlier reported about the unfortunate incident that took place on February 20 when a car hit them while they were traveling on their bike near the Najafgarh metro station, following which they were rushed to the hospital immediately. The doctor was declared brought dead, while the technician was undergoing treatment when he gave details of the incident to the police. Both the victims were employees of Delhi Government hospitals.
As per a media report in the Indian Express, the accused was allegedly driving his father's Mahindra KUV car when the incident took place. The police said that he is a second-year student of the Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Hisar.
Before his death, the technician had told the police that he was riding the bike and traveling towards the metro station when the accused hit them and fled away. At the beginning of the investigation, the police had scanned the CCTVs in the area but they were unable to identify the vehicle of the accused.
An officer said, "It was after some time that we were able to map the CCTVs and identify the car number. We found that the car was registered under the name of a firm. The director of the firm said the car was being used by his employee Surender. We interrogated Surender, who tried to mislead us and blame a colleague. He was changing his statements and there were many contradictions in his version. We interrogated him again and it was revealed that Surender's son Mayank was allegedly the driver."
The accused was arrested from his place of residence and the vehicle was seized, reports the Indian Express. The police also added that they are planning to take action against the employee Surrender who tried to mislead them. The officer said, "We are questioning Mayank."
The brother of the technician who passed away said that the latter was a contractual employee and a sole earning member of the family, demanding justice and compensation for his wife and children.
The doctor is survived by his wife, who is a doctor as well, and their three-year-old child. The technician is survived by his wife and two children aged 15 and 12 years.
