Shortage of Doctors: Punjab to launch 'Earn while you Learn' programme for MBBS graduates

Ludhiana: With an aim to address the shortage of doctors in government hospitals, the Punjab government plans to launch a new programme called 'Earn while you learn,' which would recruit newly passed out MBBS students to the healthcare institutions of the state with a good salary.
The Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr Balbir Singh, on 18th March announced that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government would soon start a programme ‘Earn While You Learn’ in which MBBS pass-out students would be deputed into healthcare institutions with attractive salaries.

Dr Singh, as per a media report in the Indian Express, called the programme a revolutionary concept which would improve secondary healthcare in Punjab.
Singh also announced several other measures to cope with the shortage of doctors in the state. He said that the government was planning to bring out a policy to hire local private highly qualified doctors for surgery-based procedures to meet the shortage of gynaecologists and other specialists.
The other people who were present at the event include MLAs Sarvjit Kaur Manuke, Madan Lal Bagga, Daljit Singh Bhola Grewal, Jiwan Singh Sangowal, Rajinderpal Kaur Chhina, Hardeep Singh Mundian, Ashok Prashar Pappi, Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, Markfed chairman Amandeep Singh Mohi, Genco chairman Navjot Singh Jarg, district president Harbhupinder Singh Dharaur, district planning board chairman Sharnpal Singh Makkar, Punjab state cooperative agricultural development bank chairman Suresh Goyal, ADC (Development) Amit Kumar Panchal, civil surgeon Dr Hitinder Kaur and others from the health department, reports the HT.
Further, a district residency programme would be started by the state government to provide quality treatment to patients with the help of doctors from medical colleges and private hospitals. Singh said that the government had made a significant allocation in the budget with an aim to improve the healthcare infrastructure in the state. Their most important priority is to ensure the availability of doctors, medicines, and testing facilities in every government hospital.
Talking about the Aam Aadmi Clinics, the minister said that the clinics were started to provide world-class health services to the people at their doorsteps and announced that they are planning to open 142 more such clinics. Currently, 504 Aam Aadmi clinics are functioning in the state where the people have been getting quality healthcare services with 80 different medicines and 41 tests were being carried out free of cost.
The minister further announced that 30 new Aam Aadmi Clinics and 110 CM Ki Yogshals would be coming up in Ludhiana. He reviewed other schemes, including Ayushman Bharat Mukh Mantri Sehat Bima Yojana, De-addiction centers, and the functioning of Aam Aadmi Clinics.
