Superintendent of Indore's SSH removed over expired drug stock

Doctor Removed
Indore: The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGM), Indore, has removed Dr Sumit Shukla from his role as Superintendent of the Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) and appointed Dr Ashok Yadav as in-charge superintendent with immediate effect after a late-night inspection uncovered expired and poorly stored medicines in the hospital’s drug store.
The inspection, led by Dean Dr Arvind Ghanghoria on August 10, revealed a large stock of expired drugs, including high-value cancer drugs, vaccines, surgical items and injections. Many of these medicines, worth nearly Rs 20 lakh, were found stored in improper conditions.
It was discovered that several drugs were kept at room temperature instead of a mandatory controlled environment. As a result, the inspection team seized all the expired and improperly stored items on the spot.

Following the findings, Dr Ghanghoria issued an order late Sunday night appointing Dr Ashok Yadav as the new in-charge superintendent and removing Dr Sumit Shukla from his position, reports The Free Press Journal.
However, the decision has stirred discussion among doctors who have alleged the involvement of internal politics. Some pointed out that managing the drug inventory is the direct responsibility of the pharmacist and the store in charge, not the superintendent.
A senior faculty member, on condition of anonymity, said, "The superintendent has been removed for an irregularity that falls under the direct responsibility of the store in charge and the pharmacist. If this is the standard, similar action should be taken against superintendents of other hospitals under MGM, where such lapses are common."
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that the uncertainty surrounding the post of dean at MGM Medical College, Indore, ended with the appointment of Dr. Arvind Ghanghoria. He officially assumed charge, becoming the third dean in just three months. Dr. Ghanghoria replaced Dr. V.P. Pandey, who had a brief tenure at the college.
