Tamil Nadu to recruit over 2500 doctors in Govt Hospitals

Tirunelveli: Health Minister Ma Subramanian announced on Sunday that the state government is recruiting 2,553 doctors through the Medical Recruitment Board (MRB) to bolster the healthcare system in Tamil Nadu. This initiative aims to address the current shortage of medical personnel in government hospitals and ensure a surplus of doctors by early 2025.
This announcement came during Subramanian’s visit to Tirunelveli on Sunday where he inaugurated a new pay ward at the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TvMCH) as well as a private hospital. He emphasized that the move would go a long way in improving healthcare services across the state. This recruitment drive is expected to fill gaps in the existing 1,353 doctor vacancies at government hospitals. Additionally, by 2026, there are expected to be 1,200 more vacancies, bringing the total number of doctors to be recruited to 2,553.
Minister Subramanian also highlighted that to address the ongoing staff shortage, the Medical Services Recruitment Board (MRB) issued a notification in the newspapers inviting applications to fill the vacancies. As a result, an overwhelming number of applications were received, for the 2,553 doctor posts, a total of 24,000 applications have been received. The certificate verification process will soon be completed, and a written examination is scheduled for January 27, 2025. The state government plans to hire a company, such as TATA Consultancy Services, to conduct the online test for these doctor posts.
Once the recruitment is complete, Tamil Nadu's government hospitals will be fully staffed. This new recruitment drive is expected to leave the government hospitals with 1,200 surplus doctors by 2025. The MRB had initially planned to issue appointment orders to the selected candidates, but around 30 court cases were filed against the recruitment process. Minister Subramanian stated that the government has invited the litigants to discuss how to resolve the issue and ensure that the recruitment proceeds without further delays.
In addition to doctor vacancies, the state also faces a shortage of village health nurses, with 2,250 positions yet to be filled.
