Bareily doctor rescued by police from clutches of scammers moments before losing money

Thane: A 50-year-old doctor from Dombivli fell victim to an investment scam, resulting in a loss of Rs 3.47 crore. The scammers had promised her high short-term returns, offering profits between 10% and 50%, but these claims turned out to be fraudulent.

The victim, who owns and operates a nursing home, became involved with the scammers in November 2024 after her contact number was added to a WhatsApp group. The group, which purported to offer tips and advice on share market investments, had 39 members.

According to Free Press Journal, the investment 'expert' in the group promised 10% to 50 % short-term profit (returns from selling assets held for one year or less), said the doctor, adding that the scammers later made her download a trading app.

Initially, the doctor saw some positive returns on her investments, which further reinforced her belief in the authenticity of the platform. However, the initial profits were later found to be fabricated as part of the scam.

Believing she was making genuine investments, the doctor continued to follow the instructions given by the scammers and transferred Rs 3.47 Crore of money to various accounts. However, when the doctor requested her profit, the scammers began giving evasive responses and, at one point, asked for more money to cover alleged taxes and charges.

Realizing she had been duped, the doctor eventually raised a complaint on the cybercrime portal. Following this, the Thane police registered a case and began investigating the matter.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that more than a month after a renowned Pune-based skin specialist, the founder of a Skin Clinic in Baner, and his friend were duped of Rs 1.71 crore by a Jaipur-based doctor under the pretext of cryptocurrency investments, the Chatushrungi police arrested the doctor on Friday and produced him before a magisterial court.
