Tripura doctor accuses IAS officer husband of domestic violence, dowry demands

Agartala: In an alleged case of domestic violence, a female doctor has filed a complaint with the state women's commission against her husband, an IAS officer in Tripura accusing him of beating her and fracturing her hand after she refused to meet his dowry demands.

The incident has drawn media attention after the doctor claimed that the local police failed to act on her complaint which prompted her to contact the state women's commission but no action has been taken yet in this regard. It is reported that she might approach the National Commission for Women to seek justice if no action is taken on her complaints.

According to the doctor's statement, her husband and his family members began constantly harassing and pressuring her over additional dowry demands even though she claimed that her father had given lot of dowry in the form of cash and gold at the time of marriage.

As per The Sentinel news report, the complainant originally from Kerala tied the knot with the accused IAS officer, currently serving as the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) in Belonia in Tamil Nadu in March of 2022.

The alleged assault occurred during a confrontation on January 8 when the doctor along with her father tried to enter the residence of the IAS officer as they had an ongoing dispute over dowry issues. However, while the doctor and her father tried to enter the house, the accused IAS officer allegedly began using foul language on them.

During the altercation, the doctor claimed that her husband broke her hand, following which she sought initial treatment at Belonia Hospital and later received further care at GBP Hospital in Agartala.

Following the alleged assault, the doctor approached the Belonia police station to register a case against her husband but the police officers reportedly did not register her complaint.

Having no other options left and allegedly tired of the physical abuse, the doctor made a formal complaint with the state women's commission and also filed a complaint of domestic violence in a Kerala court. However, no action has been taken yet against the accused IAS officer. Further, she submitted letters of complaint to the chief secretary and DGP.
