Two maternal deaths in one week at Bhopalgarh Hospital; Rajasthan removes doctor, nursing officer
Maternal Deaths at Bhopalgarh Hospital Trigger Inquiry and Administrative Action
Jodhpur: The Rajasthan Medical Department has removed a doctor and a nursing officer at the Government Sub-District Hospital in Bhopalgarh and placed them under Awaiting Posting Orders (APO) after a woman died following childbirth complications, marking the second maternal death linked to the hospital within a week.
According to the news reports, the deceased, a resident of Diyawadi village in Nagaur district, was admitted to the Bhopalgarh Government Sub-District Hospital on Wednesday evening for delivery. She underwent a normal vaginal delivery on Thursday morning but reportedly developed severe postpartum bleeding soon afterwards.
As her condition deteriorated, she was referred to the government-run Ummed Hospital in Jodhpur for advanced treatment. Despite medical intervention, she died on Friday.
The latest incident comes just days after another maternal death was reported from the same hospital. Last Saturday, a pregnant woman from Gotan in Nagaur district was admitted to the facility with labour pain. She was also referred to Ummed Hospital after her condition deteriorated during treatment and died shortly after arrival, reportedly due to heavy bleeding during transit.
Following the deaths of the two women, Jodhpur-II chief medical and health officer Jitendra Singh Charan ordered an inquiry and removed a doctor and a nursing officer with immediate effect. “A departmental committee has been constituted to investigate the deaths, and its report is awaited,” said Charan, reports TOI.
The recent incidents have intensified scrutiny of maternal healthcare services in Rajasthan. In recent months, several maternal deaths have been reported from government hospitals across the state, including five new mothers in Kota and two women in Bikaner who reportedly died due to kidney-related complications following caesarean deliveries.
Concerns over maternal healthcare were further heightened on June 20 after the condition of eight women deteriorated following caesarean-section deliveries at Paota District Hospital in Jodhpur. While most of the patients recovered and were discharged, one woman continues to remain in critical condition at AIIMS Jodhpur.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that following reports of eight women developing serious complications following childbirth at Paota District Hospital in Jodhpur, health authorities have suspended the use of 25 medicines and injections, including IV drips administered during Caesarean deliveries.
In response to a series of such incidents, the Rajasthan government has formed multiple inquiry committees. The World Health Organization has also reportedly sought a comprehensive report from the Central government regarding maternal healthcare outcomes in the state.
