"When we talk about appointing doctors of existing medical colleges as teachers in newly set up medical colleges, the NMC (National Medical Commission) says that it has no objection but the problem is that they have not written a single research paper," he added.

Lucknow: Stressing on the importance of research in the medical field, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has asked the state's doctors to focus on writing new research papers, publications, generating patents, and not limit themselves to treating patients.

The UP CM made this appeal while inaugurating the Department of Vascular Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the King George Medical University (KGMU) and also launched Asia's first 'Pathogen Reduction Machine'.

Yogi Adityanath further stressed on the importance of developing medical facilities in smaller districts and far-flung areas, the State Health Department should try to provide the treatment in the place itself, and no patient should be referred to Lucknow before trying to treat them in the district itself.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday said the Uttar Pradesh government is making rapid strides for the creation of a medical system that ensures equitable and affordable access to quality healthcare keeping in mind the progress of medical science.

"Some teachers of the KGMU have been recognised across the world as good scientists, but still, there is a need for us to do a lot more," the chief minister said.

He added, "When we talk about appointing doctors of existing medical colleges as teachers in newly set up medical colleges, the NMC (National Medical Commission) says that it has no objection but the problem is that they have not written a single research paper,".

If we are not able to write research papers, there will be no progress towards patenting, the chief minister asserted.

"There is no shortage of patients in KGMU but where are the research papers and publications? We have to make it a part of our daily routine and if we do not engage with it, it will hinder our progress," he said.

"Let us also make writing a habit. Don't just limit yourself to treatment. New research papers should come from KGMU, on behalf of every faculty member, and on behalf of every department, we should give our publications. All the departments here should have some articles published in international journals," he said.

The chief minister said KGMU must move with the times.

"KGMU has come a long way. Five years ago, KGMU completed its 100-year journey, which is a milestone for any institution. In these 100 years, a lot of progress has been made in many areas of medical science," he said.

Yogi said, "We are progressing with the intent to ensure progress in every field and not deterioration. Today, these three important achievements of KGMU bear testimony to the fact that the state is dedicatedly working to develop the medical infrastructure, ensuring that no person is deprived of access to quality healthcare."

He congratulated Professor Shailendra Kumar, Department of Thoracic Surgery, Prof Ambrish Kumar and his entire team, and Prof Tulika Chandra, Head, Department of Transfusion Medicine.

Maintaining that 'organ transplant' is the biggest requirement of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi said, "This is innovation for UP in the field of organ transplant, which is the biggest requirement of the state. Now, the state will be seen leading in this field as well.

He said, "Happy to see that some of the faculty here have been recognized as 'learned' scientists in the world, however, we still have a long way to go.

"I urge all those serving as doctors in the district hospitals to develop their skills as specialists and engage in writing research papers, and publications and generating patents. The skilled faculty is required at all the medical colleges developing under 'One District One Medical College' by the government."

"If we fail to develop ourselves to suit the present-day needs, society will always look down upon us with questionable eyes," he said.

Stressing the importance of the development of medical facilities in smaller districts and far-flung areas, the chief minister said that the State Health Department should try to provide the treatment in the place itself. "No patient should be referred to Lucknow before trying to treat him or her in the district itself," he said.

Adityanath said, "I assure the KGMU Family of all possible assistance to support the institution in any kind of initiative aimed at improving the presence of medical facilities in the state."
