UP doctor booked for alleged sexual harassment of patient

Bareilly: A 34-year-old doctor in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district has been booked by police after a woman accused him of sexually harassing her during treatment at a private hospital.

According to the police, the incident came to light after the woman’s brother filed a complaint, stating that his sister was admitted to the hospital on Friday and discharged the following day. After returning home, the woman revealed that on the day of her discharge, the doctor had allegedly tried to sexually assault her. She said the doctor fled the scene when she raised an alarm, and she refrained from immediately reporting the incident due to fear.

The victim and her brother later approached the police and lodged a First Information Report, following which a case was lodged under Section 75 (sexual harassment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, reports the Indian Express.

Speaking to the Indian Express, a police officer involved in the probe said, “The investigation has begun, and all aspects of the case will be examined before any action is taken. The medical examination of the victim has been conducted, and the report is awaited.”

The officer added that the victim’s statement before the magistrate is yet to be recorded, and no arrests have been made so far. Police are also recording statements from hospital staff who were present at the time of the incident to gather further details.

Meanwhile, news of the alleged assault triggered protests outside the private hospital. A group of locals gathered to demand immediate action against the doctor. Police were deployed to the scene and managed to disperse the crowd after assuring them of a thorough and impartial investigation.
