UP doctor booked for allegedly performing sex reassignment surgery without consent
Muzaffarnagar: A doctor at Begrajpur Medical College in Mansoorpur has been booked following allegations that sex reassignment surgery was performed on a 20-year-old youth without obtaining his consent.
The youth, about 20 years old, was brought to a private hospital here by Om Prakash who had been sexually assaulting him for the past two years, according to a complaint lodged by the victim’s father.
Police said the victim had been missing from his home for a month.
The incident occurred at Begrajpur Medical College in Mansoorpur. Mujahid, a 20-year-old resident of Sanjak village, claimed that on June 3, he was deceived by Omprakash. Allegedly, Omprakash persuaded the doctors at the medical college to conduct surgery on Mujahid, which included the removal of his genitals and an involuntary gender reassignment.
According to an NDTV report, "He brought me here, and the next morning I had an operation. When I regained consciousness, I was told that I had been changed from a boy to a girl," Mujahid recounted.
"He said, 'I changed you from a man to a woman and now you have to live with me. I have prepared a lawyer and prepared a court marriage for you. Now I will shoot your father and the land of your share will be named after me and then I will sell it and go to Lucknow'," Mujahid recalled.
Omprakash reportedly informed Mujahid that he would be required to live with him from now on, stating that neither his family nor his community would accept him anymore. Additionally, Omprakash allegedly threatened to shoot Mujahid's father and seize his portion of the family land.
It was also not known if the hospital routinely performs gender reassignment surgeries.
According to a PTI report, the case has been registered at Mansurpur police station under sections 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 420 (cheating) and 377 (unnatural offence) of IPC, Station House Officer Ashutosh Kumar said.
Police said Om Prakash brought the victim to the medical facility about a fortnight ago.
Meanwhile, activists of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) led by its state vice president Niraj Pehelwan staged a dharna outside the medical facility at Begarazpur village on Wednesday demanding action against the doctor and Om Prakash.
The victim's father said his son called his mother recently that he is in a private hospital and narrated the incident that happened to him.
"The man came here to get admitted on June 4 and his operation was conducted on June 6. All these procedures are legal and were conducted under the supervision of Dr Farooqui," said Goswami, reports India Today.
According to Chief Medical Superintendent Kirti Goswami, the man had been coming to the hospital regularly for two months to meet Dr Raza Farooqui, a plastic surgeon. Goswami said that the man identified as a woman and wanted to undergo sex reassignment surgery.
