UP government doctor assaulted by mob after Scorpio hits cow; 4 arrested, video surfaces

Badaun: A 36-year-old government doctor was allegedly dragged out of his Mahindra Scorpio and assaulted by a group of villagers in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district after his vehicle struck a stray cow on Tuesday. The cow later died while undergoing treatment, police said.

The incident took place on Tuesday in the Myaun area when the doctor, a native of Bareilly, was travelling towards the Badaun market from the Community Health Centre in Usawan, where he was posted as the Medical Officer In-Charge (MOIC).

According to police, the doctor’s vehicle reportedly struck a cow that was standing on the road. The animal collapsed near the vehicle, leaving the doctor unable to immediately drive away.

Villagers who witnessed the accident reportedly gathered at the spot and confronted the doctor. Police alleged that the crowd dragged him from the vehicle and assaulted him. Videos purportedly showing the incident have surfaced, appearing to show people vandalising the Scorpio and attempting to overturn the vehicle.

The attackers reportedly smashed the vehicle’s windows using bricks and sticks. Police personnel were alerted and reached the spot, rescuing the doctor from the crowd.

The injured cow was provided medical treatment and later taken to a gaushala. However, the animal died a short while later while undergoing treatment.

Badaun Superintendent of Police Ankita Sharma said four people had been arrested in connection with the assault. Madhav Singh Bhist, Station House Officer of Alapur police station, said the arrested accused, aged between 25 and 30, are residents of Bichpuri village and work in various odd jobs.

Based on the doctor’s complaint, Badaun Police lodged an FIR against seven named persons and several unidentified persons at Alapur police station for attempt to murder, rioting, mischief, intentional insult aimed at provoking a breach of peace on Wednesday. Police have seized the doctor’s vehicle as part of the investigation, reports The Indian Express.

Speaking to the Hindustan Times, the SHO said the doctor underwent a medical examination after the assault and no serious injuries were found. Police also conducted an examination after some people alleged that he was driving under the influence of alcohol. The examination did not establish that he had consumed alcohol.

The doctor had reportedly been on medical leave since May and returned to duty on Tuesday. As part of the departmental joining process, he appeared before the chief medical officer before proceeding towards Farrukhabad.
