Vijayawada Hospital, 9 doctors booked for alleged negligence in woman's death

Vijayawada: Police have registered an FIR against a private hospital and nine doctors over alleged medical negligence in connection with the death of a 51-year-old woman in October 2023, following directions from the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Vijayawada.
The case was registered by Satyanarayanapuram Police against the hospital and nine doctors on allegations including medical negligence, forgery, criminal conspiracy, intimidation and destruction of evidence. The allegations relate to the woman’s treatment between October 24 and 27, 2023.
According to the FIR, the woman was admitted to the private super-speciality hospital on BRTS Road in October 2023 after experiencing low blood pressure, weakness and other health problems. She reportedly had a history of atrial fibrillation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and neurological problems.
According to TOI, her son, who filed the complaint, alleged that he repeatedly requested consultations with specialists in cardiology and pulmonology because of her existing medical conditions. The complaint stated that the duty doctor initially administered intravenous fluids and informed the family that specialist services were available at the hospital.
A chest X-ray reportedly indicated a minor lung infection, following which the woman was advised to remain admitted. The family was allegedly informed that a cardiologist had reviewed her ECG and X-ray.
According to the complaint, the woman subsequently suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and died on October 27, 2023.
Following her death, her son sought details of the treatment provided to her, along with the qualifications and registration status of the doctors involved. He subsequently approached the court, alleging lapses in her treatment and claiming that some of the doctors were practising without valid registration.
Acting on the directions of the III Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Vijayawada, issued under Section 156(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), Satyanarayanapuram Police registered the case on August 23.
Police are now examining the treatment records, qualifications and registration details of the doctors, along with the other allegations raised in the case.
