Violence at Vidisha Medical College: Doctor, 3 nurses attacked over hijab row

Vidisha: In a shocking case of alleged violence against medical professionals, a doctor and three nurses sustained serious injuries after being brutally assaulted and thrashed by a group of around 8-10 relatives of a woman patient at the emergency ward of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government Medical College, Vidisha.

According to local media reports, the assault took place on Wednesday after a 65-year-old woman, who had suffered facial injuries after falling at home, was brought to the emergency ward for treatment by her family members.

During the clinical examination, the attending doctor reportedly asked the woman to remove her hijab to properly check the injuries on her face, which is reportedly a routine medical step to properly examine a patient.

However, this request reportedly angered her family members. Within moments, the situation turned violent. Instead of cooperating for medical care, the relatives lashed out at the medical team.

Among them was a man identified as Farooq, who, along with others, allegedly attacked the doctors and nursing staff. They vandalised the ward, overturned medicine trolleys, and even broke the hospital door.

In the chaos, one doctor and three nurses were injured. The entire incident was captured on the hospital’s CCTV cameras, and the footage has gone viral on social media. In the video, a young man is seen hurriedly holding an object with the intention of throwing it at the nurses, but is stopped by the security guards.

Following the incident, the hospital administration lodged a police complaint. Acting on the complaint, the police registered an FIR and arrested the accused individuals based on CCTV footage, as reported by Amarujala.

Meanwhile, the accused family members alleged that the doctors misbehaved with them and unnecessarily insisted on removing the hijab. However, the hospital staff clarified that the hijab needed to be removed only to examine the facial injuries as part of standard medical procedure.
