West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission reconstituted with New Chairperson, Members

Kolkata: West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission (WBCERC) has been reconstituted by the state government, with retired Calcutta High Court judge Justice Biswajit Bose appointed as its new chairperson, replacing outgoing chairperson retired Justice Ashim Kumar Banerjee.
IAS officer Moumita Godara Basu has been appointed vice-chairperson of the commission, which functions as a quasi-judicial body responsible for regulating and supervising private healthcare establishments across the state.

As per a TOI report, during Banerjee’s chairmanship, the commission introduced several notable regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic, including capping the costs of Covid tests and specific diagnostic procedures.
The newly reconstituted commission comprises 13 members, including senior doctors and experts from various fields.
The members include:
- Dr. Subhash Chandra Biswas: A senior medical professional with over three decades of experience. He has guided more than 60 MD, MS, and PhD theses and has also advised the West Bengal government on the implementation of the PCPNDT Act aimed at protecting the girl child and preventing female foeticide.
- Professor (Dr.) Susanta Kumar Bandyopadhyay: Former Director of Medical Education (DME) and ex-officio Secretary of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal.
- Dr Syamasis Bandyopadhyay: A senior rheumatologist and immunologist with more than 30 years of experience. He holds MBBS and MD (Medicine) degrees and has also completed MRCP (UK), CCST (UK) and FRCP (Edinburgh).
- Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti: Former Kolkata Police Commissioner, who has also been appointed as a member of the reconstituted commission.
With the change in leadership and appointment of new members, the commission is expected to continue its role in strengthening accountability, transparency and regulation in the state’s private healthcare sector.
