New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh, yesterday inaugurated the World Congress of Diabetes - Diabetes India 2025 in Ahmedabad.
The prestigious international conference, organized by Diabetes India in collaboration with the Diabetes in Asia Study Group (DASG), is witnessing participation from leading doctors, researchers, and experts from across the world.
The event is being held at the Forum Convention and Celebration Centre, Club O7, from February 13 to 16, 2025.
In his inaugural address, Dr. Jitendra Singh said, "We are in the era of Artificial Intelligence and the fifth-largest economic power in the world. As we discuss metabolic disorders, lifestyle-related health challenges, and conditions such as fatty liver, there is a growing need for caution and preventive healthcare."

Elaborating on the significance of the event, Dr. Singh highlighted the contributions of Indian medical researchers and academicians in the diabetes movement. "This is a generation of researchers and experts who have spearheaded the diabetes movement in India. At this conference, diabetes experts are discussing the next generation of research and how we can learn from each other to benefit people," he added.
Dr. Singh also underline the growing intersection of medical science and space research. "The need for medical science and life sciences in space exploration is increasingly being recognized. About two months ago, we signed a formal MoU between the Department of Space and the Department of Biotechnology, as a new field called space biology is emerging to study astronaut health. You will be pleased to know that in the latest SPADx mission, we also experimented with growing vegetables and plants in a space environment,"*he said.
Touching upon the issue of misinformation in the healthcare sector, the Minister remarked, *"Today, various diet plans are available in the market, attracting customers who pay thousands of rupees for them. This is a peculiar trend. More misinformation is often more harmful than a lack of information. When we started studying misinformation, we found that effective methods were being implemented to counter its impact."
A key highlight of the conference was the release of the Ahmedabad Declaration by Diabetes India and the Diabetes in Asia Study Group (DASG). This landmark declaration calls for urgent action to address the alarming rise in Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) among young Asians. Prepared in collaboration with 59 leading global experts, the declaration was also published today in the prestigious journal Diabetes and Metabolism - Research.
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh also attended the Union Budget 2025 Seminar as the Chief Guest. The seminar was organized by the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), JITO, and GLS University. The event brought together policymakers, economists, and business leaders to discuss key aspects of the Union Budget and its implications across various sectors.
The World Congress of Diabetes – Diabetes India 2025 continues to serve as a vital platform for discussions on cutting-edge diabetes research, preventive strategies, and policy interventions to tackle the growing burden of diabetes in India and across Asia.
