Global Association of Indian Medical Students Launches AMR Special Edition
Bhubaneswar: The Global Association of Indian Medical Students (GAIMS) has announced the launch of a Special Edition on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) under its GAIMS-AXIS initiative, reaffirming its commitment to advancing academic excellence and community-driven medical scholarship.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to resist medicines (antimicrobials) meant to kill them, making infections harder or impossible to treat, increasing illness, death, and healthcare costs.
The Special Edition is being led under the editorial leadership of Dr. Dattareya Mukherjee, Dr. Prakhar Bajpai, and Dr. Abhishek Kashyap, who collectively bring strong academic, clinical, and organizational expertise to address one of the most critical global health challenges of the present era. GAIMS was founded and launched under the vision of Dr. Shubham Anand, Chairman, GAIMS, to foster academic excellence, student-led research, and community-oriented initiatives among Indian medical students at a global level.
The Special Edition on Antimicrobial Resistance was formally launched by Dr. Priya Abraham, Former Director of the ICMR–National Institute of Virology, a distinguished virologist widely recognised for her leadership in isolating India’s first live COVID-19 virus—an achievement that played a pivotal role in the development of India’s indigenous COVID-19 vaccine, COVAXIN.
The launch was further graced by Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, President, American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), along with Vivek Agnihotri, National Award-winning film director known for The Vaccine War and The Kashmir Files, and Pallavi Joshi, National Award-winning actress who portrayed Dr. Priya Abraham in The Vaccine War. Their presence underscored the intersection of science, public health, and public engagement.
Antimicrobial Resistance remains one of the most pressing public health challenges worldwide. Through this Special Edition, GAIMS aims to stimulate academic dialogue, promote evidence-based research, and empower medical students to actively contribute to solutions addressing the growing threat of drug-resistant infections. This launch marks a significant milestone in GAIMS’ mission to strengthen medical education, global health advocacy, and leadership development among the next generation of healthcare professionals.
