Goa Health Minister Advises Precautions as Seasonal Flu Cases Surge
Panaji: As seasonal flu cases continue to rise across the state, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has urged the public to take preventive measures to avoid contracting the illness. On Monday, Rane emphasized the importance of good hygiene, staying hydrated, and eating nutritious meals to boost immunity and stay healthy.
He also advised visiting the nearest community or primary health centre for medical attention if symptoms such as fever, cough, or body aches appear. Taking the necessary precautions is crucial to staying well.
Doctors have noted that the viral flu typically lasts between two to seven days and is generally treated symptomatically with good hydration and rest. Antibiotics are generally not needed unless complications arise. However, healthcare professionals anticipate that the number of cases may increase, especially with the arrival of the monsoon rains.
Recently, doctors have observed that many patients are experiencing typical flu symptoms such as a cold, cough, and wheezing. They suspect that the abrupt weather changes have contributed to this increase in flu cases.

According to TOI, “Parents must take their child to a doctor if the fever doesn’t go after 48 hours, if the patient is not taking oral feeds and medication, and in cases where the fever is very high,” said paediatrician Dr Pinky S Paliencar. She advised giving children nutritious food and water and monitoring their intake of cold drinks and ice creams, which usually increases during the holiday season. “You cannot deny a child ice creams completely, but you can give them warm water after eating an ice cream,” she suggested.
Dr. Rufino Monteiro, a prominent physician, stated that the classic flu symptoms – fever, body aches, and headaches – are frequently seen with changes in the weather, especially after the monsoon showers. He stressed that individuals should avoid self-medication and consult a doctor if symptoms persist or if the fever continues to rise. He also emphasized the need for good hydration, especially during the hot summer months, which can exacerbate flu symptoms.

The Union Health Ministry has also issued guidelines to help curb the spread of seasonal flu. The ministry advised wearing masks, avoiding crowded places, and practicing good respiratory hygiene, such as covering the mouth and nose with a handkerchief or cloth when coughing or sneezing. It also recommended avoiding touching one’s eyes, nose, and mouth to minimize the risk of spreading or contracting the flu.
