Center : 22 new AIIMS centres, upgradation projects sanctioned
New Delhi: The ministry of health and family welfare have sanctioned the establishment of 22 new centres of AIIMS and 75 upgradation projects of GMCs/Institutes have been sanctioned, out of which 6 AIIMS are fully functional. Sup, including AIIMS at Raebareli and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) scheme.

The information was provided by the minister of state in the ministry of health and family welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, while giving a written reply in the Lok Sabha, who noted that, "The Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) aims at correcting regional imbalances in the availability of affordable tertiary healthcare services and to augment facilities for quality medical education in the country. The scheme has two components-setting up of new AIIMS and upgradation of existing Government Medical Colleges."
As per a notification released by the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) on 20th July, 2020, it had sanctioned the Viability Gap Funding to Medical Colleges to be set up in a PPP manner by utilizing the existing District Hospitals, said the minister. Further, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for 'Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals' with preference to underserved areas, where there is no existing Government or private medical college.
Under this centrally sponsored scheme, 157 new medical colleges were approved by the government of India under three phases. And out of them, 70 medical colleges received letters of Permission (LoP) to start undergraduate medical courses by the National Medical Commission.
The reply was given in response to the question by MPs Bhola Singh and Rajveer Singh in the Lok Sabha.
