11-month-old dies at Gadchiroli hospital; family alleges negligence

Nagpur: Medical negligence has been alleged following the death of an 11-month-old girl at the District Women and Children’s Hospital in Gadchiroli, prompting demand for a detailed inquiry into the incident.

The deceased, a resident of Dibhna village, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday around 12:30 PM for minor treatment. Doctors reportedly provided first aid and began further care. However, her condition deteriorated unexpectedly, and she was pronounced dead around 3 PM on Wednesday. Preliminary reports indicate that respiratory failure caused by pneumonia may have led to her death.

According to family members, the child’s condition was stable until about two hours before she suddenly worsened. Relatives and local residents have questioned the circumstances surrounding the death, alleging possible negligence in treatment. They have demanded a thorough investigation and strict action against the doctor responsible for her care.

The incident sparked tension at the hospital, as family members, local residents, and political leaders gathered to demand accountability. Police were called to control the situation and assured that further legal action would follow after the post-mortem report.

In this regard, Dr. Madhuri Kilnake, Superintendent of the District Women and Children's Hospital, stated that the girl was admitted to the hospital around 12:30 pm on Tuesday. At that time, she did not show signs of oxygen deficiency or severe pneumonia. She added that sudden pneumonia, combined with phlegm in her throat, likely caused respiratory failure, which may have led to her death. The case will be investigated, and necessary action will be taken, reports Navbharat.

Mahendra Brahmanwade, president of the Congress Committee in Gadchiroli, visited the hospital following the incident and sought detailed information from the administration. He called for a comprehensive inquiry and demanded strict action if any negligence by doctors or hospital personnel is found.

Brahmanwade also raised concerns over the condition of healthcare services in the district, stating that Gadchiroli, a remote tribal area, relies heavily on government hospitals for medical care. He alleged that shortages of doctors and medical equipment often hamper timely treatment for patients.
