2 North Bengal Hospitals to Implement BiometricAttendence for Contractual Staff
Siliguri: Amid nationwide outrage over the rape and murder case at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) and the Siliguri District Hospital (SDH) are set to introduce a biometric attendance system for the contractual staff recruited by private agencies and deployed in these two state-run hospitals.
The District Magistrate of Darjeeling, Preeti Goel, recently chaired a review meeting, during which she directed the NBMCH and the SDH to introduce biometric attendance for contractual workers. A senior official of the district health department of Darjeeling said that the system would ensure transparency by maintaining a proper record of each worker's attendance and identity, and would keep out unauthorized individuals.
SDH superintendent Chandan Ghosh confirmed that the hospital is making the necessary infrastructure adjustments to accommodate the new system

As per recent media reports, the medical superintendent-cum-vice-principal of the NBMCH, Sanjay Mallick, commented on this and told Telegraph India, “We have over 140 contractual security personnel recruited through agencies at the NBMCH. Biometric attendance will be introduced for all of them soon.”
In response to the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the district health department has decided to implement a biometric system to monitor the entry and exit of contractual workers more effectively. This move aims to enhance security and ensure better accountability for staff deployed at the hospital.

The move to install biometric attendance also seeks to address long-standing issues related to the recruitment and management of contractual workers in state-run hospitals. A source has revealed that for years, it had been alleged that these agencies did not deploy the full workforce stipulated in the contracts. They hired fewer workers and claimed payment for the full strength of staff, pocketing the margin.
