300-bed railway hospital to come up in Howrah at cost of Rs 99 crore

Howrah Railway Healthcare Network
Howrah: In a significant push to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in eastern India, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a new 300-bed divisional railway hospital in Howrah, a key healthcare project under the Rs 820 crore development package announced for West Bengal.
The announcement was made during the Paschimbanga Divas celebrations held at Tarakeswar in Hooghly, where the Prime Minister unveiled multiple development initiatives across important sectors, including railways, agriculture, rural development, fisheries and animal husbandry, according to Medical Buyer.
The proposed railway hospital is planned at an estimated cost of Rs 99 crore. Once completed, the facility is expected to offer advanced diagnostic services, modern medical equipment and specialised clinical care. The hospital has been envisioned to improve healthcare access for railway employees, pensioners and other beneficiaries, while also supporting the medical needs of the wider local community.

As part of the broader development package, the 300-bed hospital stands out as one of the major healthcare-focused investments for the region. The expansion of hospital capacity in Howrah is expected to help improve access to specialist care, reduce referrals to other centres and enhance the overall quality of medical services available to beneficiaries in eastern India.
Besides the hospital project, the Prime Minister also announced several railway infrastructure upgrades. These included the launch of new rail services between Nabadwip and Puri and the dedication of the Sankrail-Santragachi Link Line. These projects form part of the larger effort to improve connectivity and strengthen public infrastructure in the state.
Indian Railways operates one of the country’s largest employer-supported healthcare systems, with a nationwide network of hospitals and health units providing medical services to serving and retired railway staff.
The investment also aligns with the broader focus on modernising public healthcare infrastructure through improved hospital capacity, technology-enabled diagnostics, upgraded clinical services and better access to specialist care.
