37-year-old brain dead woman gives new lease of life to 3 patients at Fortis Hospital Mulund
Mumbai: Fortis Hospital Mulund witnessed its 1st donation of 2023, after the family of a 37-year-old brain-dead woman, from Uran, consented to donate her organs.
Suffering from Meningitis with multiple brain infarcts and Cerebral Edema, the patient was under treatment at the hospital for the past few weeks; her condition rapidly deteriorated and she was subsequently declared brain dead.
The family’s kind act of donation saved and enriched the life of three patients in Mumbai suffering from end-stage organ failure.
Two of the retrieved organs were allocated by Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) to waitlisted patients a Fortis Hospital, Mulund - a 51-year-old male from Kharghar, Navi Mumbai received the donated Liver, and a 39-year-old male from Bhandup, Mumbai received a donated Kidney.
The second kidney was allocated to 40- year-old male waitlisted at another hospital in Mumbai. After the patient was declared brain dead, her family was counselled, after which her husband and siblings consented to donate her organs. The patient is survived by her husband and two young children – a three-year-old boy and nine-year-old girl.
Doctors at Fortis Hospital Mulund played a crucial role in retrieval of the organs. The Liver transplant was led by Dr Gaurav Gupta, Senior Consultant & Chief Surgeon - Liver Transplant & HPB Surgery and Dr Kapildev Yadav, Consultant-Liver Transplant & HPB Surgery. The Kidney transplant was led by Dr Ramesh Mahajan, Consultant-Urology and Saurabh Patil, Consultant, Urology & Robotic Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mulund.
Speaking about the organ donation which enriched three lives, Dr S. Narayani, Business Head-Fortis Hospitals Maharashtra, said, “It is heartening to see families across our society respond warmly towards the cause of organ donation.
