62-year-old patient dies after falling from bed at Thiruvananthapuram MCH
Thiruvananthapuram- In a tragic incident, a 62-year-old patient undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) in Thiruvananthapuram died after allegedly falling from his bed.
The deceased, identified as Wilfred, a resident of Lenin Bhavan in Padappakkara, Kollam, had been admitted to the hospital on May 25 for treatment for jaundice.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 5:30 PM on Saturday, when the patient reportedly fell face-down onto the floor from his bed. He sustained severe injuries as a result of the fall, and medical staff immediately administered treatment.
An official stated that, given his critical condition, the doctors present immediately admitted him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). However, his death was confirmed an hour later. This incident occurred in Ward Number 5 of the hospital, which is one of the busiest wards in this premier tertiary care institution of the state.
Following the incident, the deceased's son, Lenin, lodged a formal complaint. After which the Medical College Police registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, according to hospital officials, Wilfred was experiencing delirium due to hepatic encephalopathy, an advanced stage of brain dysfunction caused by a severe liver infection, as per the TNIE news report.
The police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which pertains to the investigation of unnatural deaths.
The police stated that statements from hospital staff, fellow patients, bystanders, and relatives will be recorded to ascertain the exact sequence of this tragic incident. Investigators are also expected to examine whether safety measures, such as bed rails and regular patient monitoring, were in place at the time of the incident.
This incident has heightened concerns regarding patient safety in government hospitals, particularly in overcrowded wards where a large number of patients from southern Kerala receive treatment.
