AIIMS Delhi proposes emergency block revamp, 300 beds to be added

New Delhi: With an aim to redevelop the premier health institute, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, into a world-class medical institute, the expansion of the emergency department has been planned under the master plan. The proposed facility will provide an emergency block with 300 beds.

Considering the shortage of beds in the emergency block of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, the apex institute has decided to redevelop its existing emergency block to 300 beds.

Patients who come to AIIMS in severe conditions are often forced to wait longer to get treatment due to the lack of beds at the emergency ward, which prompted the apex institute to take action and upgrade the facility to 2.5 times bigger than the existing facility.

Currently, the emergency ward has 120 beds and the institute witness a footfall of approximately 300 patients every day. Therefore, Patients often have to lie on stretchers for hours outside the emergency ward of AIIMS.

According to a senior official, the long waiting time will be drastically reduced after the upgradation of the facility. It will no longer be necessary for them to wait for hours outside the emergency room. The proposal to expand the emergency services is expected to bring relief to such patients.

Additionally, doctors will also be able to gain relief as they are often surrounded by the pressure to treat an increasing number of patients coming at the institute to seek emergency treatments.

The facility will cost over Rs 9,000 crore and the redevelopment project is expected to start this year. As per a media report in mp, the Environment Department has already given approval for this mega project in September 2022.

Facilities like 50 new operation theatres, over 3,000 patient care beds, research labs, clinical trial facilities, animal facilities, 4,000 hostel units, and 14,000 parking spaces, including a helipad for air ambulance are proposed in the project.

The emergency block will have a special corridor for ambulances which will be connected to the Red Zone so that ambulances can easily reach near the Red Zone and a helipad will also be arranged.
