AIIMS Nagpur resident doctors call off protest after security assurance
Nagpur: Resident doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur on Friday called off its protest after getting assurances from the hospital administration and police regarding their safety following an assault on a junior resident doctor.
In a press release, AIIMS Nagpur said that the administration strongly condemns any act of violence against doctors.
Members of the Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) and AIIMS Nagpur officials met Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil and other senior police officers in the morning, it said.
According to PTI, the Commissioner of Police assured the resident doctors that security at the hospital will be increased and stringent action will be taken against the culprits in Tuesday’s incident.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that an on-duty junior resident doctor involved in the treatment of a patient in the MICU of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur was reportedly physically assaulted, abused, and threatened with death by a group of around 10 attendants following the patient's death.
It has been alleged that the accused individuals assaulted the doctor, held him by the collar, and issued threats, including an alleged threat to shoot him outside the hospital premises.
A resident doctor at the hospital was allegedly attacked by four persons inside the ICU on Tuesday following the death of a relative during treatment.
Resident Doctors on Thursday staged a demonstration condemning the incident and demanded that the institute adopt a no-special-treatment policy, claiming that very often patients bring letters from politicians and expect privileges or try to intimidate the staff.
As demanded by the protesting Resident Doctors, AIIMS will undertake the legal and police proceedings in connection with the incident, the release issued by the institute said.
Earlier, the victim doctor himself had filed a police complaint.
AIIMS also assured that no Resident Doctor or student will face any victimisation or harassment due to their participation in the protest.
