Andhra Pradesh to conduct safety audits across district and teaching hospitals

Vijayawada: Audits and awareness programmes will be conducted across all district and teaching hospitals in Andhra Pradesh on September 17 to mark World Patient Safety Day, Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav said on Wednesday.
In an official statement issued from Amaravati, the Minister said preventing medical harm was as important as providing treatment. He outlined a four-pillar framework for patient safety comprising early disease detection, timely intervention, medication safety and continuous post-treatment monitoring.

According to the news reports, under the State’s flagship Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD 4.0) initiative, health screenings have been completed for over 2.83 crore citizens aged 18 and above.
The population-level screening programme identified high blood pressure in 59.38 lakh individuals and diabetes in 48.32 lakh people. It also flagged suspected cases of oral, breast and cervical cancers for secondary testing and further oncological care.
To address treatment gaps and prevent drop-offs among patients requiring chronic care, the state has integrated diagnostic data, clinical prescriptions and follow-up schedules into the ‘Sanjeevani’ digital healthcare platform.
The Minister said digitising patients’ medical histories would help ensure continuity of care across primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities.
Addressing clinical protocols, Satya Kumar directed hospital administrators and medical staff to strictly enforce medication safety measures. He urged doctors and nurses to counsel patients against arbitrary dosage changes or abrupt discontinuation of prescribed drugs, while encouraging families to actively participate in the recovery process, reports TNIE.
District health officials have been instructed to conduct periodic safety audits at government hospitals to identify and address operational bottlenecks, streamline patient registration and train nursing staff in safe and error-free drug administration.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, inaugurated 10 Critical Care Blocks (CCBs) and 12 Integrated Public Health Laboratories (IPHLs) in Andhra Pradesh in the presence of the Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu and Minister for Health, Family Welfare & Medical Education Shri Satya Kumar Yadav.
