Baby swap case: LMCH suspends two nurses for wrongly registering newborn's gender
Guwahati: Following the baby swap case in Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital, the hospital administration suspended two nurses involved for wrongly registering a newborn's gender.
The nurses have been identified as Juli Borua and Ruby Hazarika were found responsible for allegedly registering a newborn as a boy, while the patient has given birth to a girl child.
Medical Dialogues team had reported this incident where Chayanika Das, the mother, a resident of Lakhimpur town got admitted to the hospital and as per her statement, she gave birth to a boy whose weight was 2.8 kg on Saturday morning. After she was shifted to the post-natal ward on Sunday morning, she discovered that the nurse gave her a baby girl to which she argued and said that she clearly remembered that it was a boy.

The additional superintendent of LMCH, Dr Nikhil Kakoty, said "The baby was in the mother's custody on Saturday night. But after she woke up in the morning, the baby turned out to be a girl. Chayanika said the newborn was wrapped in cloth since birth and did not confirm whether the baby was a boy or a girl."
While probing the case, the hospital authorities found the duo to be responsible for the act and suspended them.
LMCH official told Gplus that "After the delivery, one nurse said that it was a male and the other cleaned the baby and handed it over to the mother. In the Delivery Note, there is a column to check any deformity and they did not check it and which resulted in this negligence. The administration has decided to suspend them and a show cause notice will be given to others who were also responsible."
