Bastar's first Super Speciality Hospital to open in Jagdalpur this February

Jagdalpuri: The first super speciality hospital in Chhattisgarh’s Naxal-affected Bastar region is set to open in Jagdalpur, with services expected to begin in February. The 240-bed facility is being established through a partnership between the State government and Hyderabad-based Continental Hospitals.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that the Chhattisgarh government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Telangana-based hospital for operating a 240-bed super speciality hospital, built at a cost of Rs 200 crore in Jagdalpur, the headquarters of Bastar district in the state, an official said.

Until now, residents of Bastar have had to travel to Raipur, Bilaspur, or even Hyderabad and Odisha for tertiary medical care. “

“This is a challenge for us to prove that we can make a difference in the healthcare of India,” Dr Guru Reddy, founder and managing director of Continental Hospitals, said. “We have taken this as a challenge to bring the best of care to the people of Bastar, who have been travelling to Odisha and Hyderabad for tertiary medical care,” reports Economic Times.

With the region seeing a decline in Naxalite activity, officials anticipate that security forces may need immediate access to medical care for injured personnel and, potentially, injured Naxalites during ongoing operations. A senior Chhattisgarh government official said that in the final leg of the flushing operation, it may not be possible to airlift the injured, and the super specialty hospital in the heart of Bastar would help in treating them.

The hospital is an example of an innovative public-private partnership. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) constructed the building, the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) contributed operational funds through CSR, and Continental Hospitals will provide medical specialists.

Speaking to Economic Times, Dr Reddy said, “We have hired about 35 consultant doctors, and we are in the process of hiring about 10 more. We have already hired nursing staff and junior doctors.” When asked if security concerns were expressed, Dr Reddy said, “We have been assured by the district administration that the security situation has improved manifold”.
