Bengaluru Private Hospital Booked for allegedly administering expired Electrolytes, Dextrose to 3-year-old patient
Bengaluru: A private hospital based in Bengaluru has recently been booked for administering expired medicines to a three-year-old patient, who was being treated for fever.
The patient's father, a resident of Manjunath Nagar, has filed a complaint against the hospital in Mahalakshmipuram police station. The alleged incident took place on 29.10.2023 when the patient was taken to the hospital for a check-up as she was suffering from a high fever.
According to a recent report by The New Indian Express, the medicines that were administered to the patient had allegedly expired in August 2023 and this was witnessed by the patient's father. Despite pointing it out, the hospital authorities allegedly did not give any satisfactory reply and thereafter the complainant shifted his daughter to someplace else.
The hospital has been booked for adulteration of drugs (IPC 274), sale of adulterated drugs (IPC 275), and causing hurt by the act of endangering the life of others (IPC 337).
Meanwhile, reportedly a nurse and a pharmacist have been suspended by the hospital authorities and this has been informed to the police.
As per the complaint, "After admitting the girl, a nurse reportedly administered her with multiple electrolytes and dextrose injection. Kiran, who was sitting next to his daughter observed that the medicine had expired. The medicine was manufactured in September 2021, and the expiry date was in August 2023. When he brought this to the matter of the hospital administration, he allegedly did not get a satisfactory reply. Kiran then shifted his daughter to another private hospital."
Commenting on the matter, the complainant informed the New Indian Express that his daughter has not recovered yet. He further mentioned, "She was administered with the expired medicine in the wee hours of October 29th. Because of the expired medicine, my daughter has not yet recovered completely. The hospital staff were very negligent in their reply. She is slowly recovering after she was shifted to another hospital."
Speaking to TNIE, an officer part of the investigation mentioned, "Statements of the concerned from the hospital have been recorded. The hospital has informed us about the suspension of the two persons. They are extending complete cooperation in the investigation. Action against the suspects has been initiated as per law."
