The woman died during treatment on Monday night at the Maharaja Agrasen Medical College in Agroha in Hisar district.
As per a recent media report in TOI, the woman was unmarried and four months pregnant. In order to abort the baby, the family members of the deceased introduced her as a married woman at a private hospital in Hisar. They paid Rs 50,000 to the private facility where her illegal abortion was done on March 14.
According to a press release issued by Maharaja Agrasen Medical College Director Alka Chhabra, a 19-year-old victim of “illegal abortion was referred to the college in critical condition” at 6 pm on March 16.
The woman was in septic shock and her intestines were coming out, she said, adding there were also wounds in her uterus. She said that her intestine and uterus were operated upon in the medical college.
The doctor who performed the abortion on the woman left some part of the foetus inside the uterus. Due to the negligence, the woman was in critical condition.
Seeing her deteriorating condition, she was taken to the civil hospital. Surprisingly, an enquiry was conducted by the PNDT (pre-natal diagnostic testing) nodal officer based on the complaint of a doctor to the health department.
Nodal Officer Dr Prabhu Dayal, Dr Kamid Monga, and Dr Deepika examined the woman in the general hospital and found multiple wounds inside her uterus. She was referred to Agroha Medical College, where her uterus was removed but she didn’t survive the operation.
The woman’s kidneys failed and she was kept on a ventilator but died due to multi-organ failure.
A case has been registered at the police station and an investigation is underway. While the police investigate the case, the health department searches for private hospitals.
