Cardiology Scam at Tanda Medical College? Rs 1 crore worth stents, balloon catheters seized during inspection

Palampur: Nearly Rs 1 crore worth of cardiac stents and balloon catheters were allegedly found stored illegally inside the Cardiology Department of Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College and Hospital (RPGMC), Tanda medical college, during an inspection conducted by a team of senior medical experts.

The inspection team, led by the principal of the medical college, reportedly seized the stock of stents and balloon catheters from a cupboard said to be used by a senior doctor of the department.

The items are primarily used in minimally invasive procedures (like angioplasty) to open narrowed or blocked blood vessels and restore healthy blood flow without open surgery.

The inspection was done as part of an ongoing inquiry into alleged irregularities in the functioning of the Cardiology Department, particularly regarding the procurement, storage, and implantation of stents in patients.

The Tribune has reported that the investigation team is examining whether all stents used in cardiac procedures were properly recorded as per state health department norms.

Hospital authorities are reportedly verifying procurement records, stock registers, and patient treatment data to ascertain whether any discrepancies exist between the number of stents purchased, those implanted in patients, and the stock available with the department.

Sources said the presence of these devices outside authorised storage areas has prompted closer scrutiny by the inquiry team. Authorities are also trying to determine whether all rules related to procurement, storage and utilisation of the devices were followed.

Sources indicated that the investigation team may submit its findings to the state health authorities after completing the verification process. If any lapses are established, appropriate administrative and disciplinary action could follow.

A senior official of the medical college told reporters, "The inquiry is continuing, and further details are expected to emerge after examination of departmental records and patient-related documents."
