Chandigarh hospitals to set up Portable cabin shelters for patients

Porta Cabin Shelters to Provide Safe Stay for Patients in Chandigarh Hospitals
Chandigarh: In a recent move aimed at supporting patients and their attendants, the Health Department has announced plans to install portable cabin shelters at government hospitals.
The initiative aims to provide temporary accommodation for those who have to spend long hours or stay overnight in hospital premises, particularly patients coming from distant areas or with limited financial means.

Speaking to the Indian Express, Health Director Dr Suman Singh said that a 25-bedded portable cabin shelter will be installed at the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH-16). In addition, 10-bedded portable cabins will be set up at each of the three civil hospitals located in Manimajra, Sector 22, and Sector 45. The move is aimed at offering basic shelter to patients and attendants who don’t have to stay for long periods.
Dr Singh highlighted that none of the three civil hospitals currently have facilities for overnight stays. While GMSH-16 has a waiting area, it is not sufficient for patients needing overnight accommodation. The proposed cabins aim to provide a safer and more comfortable option.
Unlike the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), these hospitals do not have many patients requiring prolonged hospitalization, which is why the bed capacity has been kept limited. “However, this facility will be a major relief for patients coming from rural and distant areas,” Dr Singh added.
The initiative, expected to be implemented with the onset of the New Year, is being hailed as a humane step toward supporting economically weaker patients and their caregivers, who currently have no option but to spend nights in corridors or open spaces.
Porta cabins are pre-fabricated, temporary structures that can be installed quickly and provide basic amenities such as roofing, lighting, seating or sleeping arrangements, and protection from heat, cold, and rain.
