CISF inspects RG Kar Medical College after SC order
Kolkata: Following the Supreme Court's directive to deploy the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a CISF team conducted an inspection of the facility on Wednesday.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) team, led by a senior officer, arrived at the hospital in the morning and discussed security arrangements with local police and hospital authorities, an official said.
As per a media report in the TOI, sources said a team of 180-odd personnel are likely to take up position outside and inside key buildings and entry-exit.
Cops said they would provide permanent transport to the CISF teams. “We are making temporary stay arrangements for them near the hospital at three guest houses for the day,” said a senior officer at Lalbazar.
''CISF will control the entire access at the entry-exit points and also at the buildings while we will look after the law and order situation in due consultation with the CISF. Our outpost will also function as usual,” said the officer.
The body of a postgraduate trainee doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered, was found in the seminar room of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, triggering nationwide outrage. A civic volunteer was arrested in connection with the case the next day.
On August 15, a mob had entered the hospital, vandalizing the emergency department, nursing station, and medicine store, and damaging CCTV cameras.
According to the PTI report, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered deployment of CISF at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to enable doctors to resume work.
“In the aftermath of the brutal incident and the demonstrations which followed, the state government was expected to ensure the deployment of the state machinery to prevent a breach of law and order, news agency PTI reported.
“It was all the more necessary to do so since investigation of the crime which took place in the precincts of the hospital was underway. We are unable to comprehend how the state was not prepared to deal with the incident of vandalisation of the premises of the hospital,” the top court said.
