Corporates' respond to Modi plea, Anand Mahindra promises new medical colleges
New Delhi: Following the news of Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the private sector to open medical colleges to prevent students leaving the country for medical education Industrialist and Chairman of Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra took to Twitter and recently shared that he was not aware of the shortage of medical colleges in India. So, he mulls to establish a medical college and asked Tech Mahindra MD and CEO, CP Gurnani to explore its possibility.
Anand tweeted on Thursday saying "I had no idea that there was such a shortfall of medical colleges in India. CP Gurnani, could we explore the idea of establishing a medical studies institution on the campus of Mahindra University?".

Mahindra's tweet follows Foreign Ministry data on the number of Indian students studying abroad.
His tweet was praised by many but also faced backlashes from the netizens as well, who responded by saying that the fee structure is a major issue in India to pursue medical education. The users said that taking admission to medical colleges abroad is more inexpensive than studying in Indian medical colleges. Several users pointed out that "reservations and donations" are also problematic parts of higher education in India.
"If you do please try to keep the fees nominal. These students go abroad not just due to lack of seats but the enormous cost," responded a user.

"It will be more appreciated if you keep the fees of your medical college in line of these abroad countries or lower than that because many private players have colleges but they charge 1-1.25 cr for the 5.5-year course," responded another Twitter user.

Money control reports that approximately 1.6 million students took the NEET for admission to MBBS in 2021, the National Medical Commission reported that there are 605 medical colleges offering 90,825 MBBS seats per year. The countries that the students prefer to study medicine in are China, Russia, Ukraine, the Philippines, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Poland, and Armenia.
