Cuttack Hospital Faces Medical Negligence Allegations over Internal Injury

Private Hospital
Cuttack: A case of alleged medical negligence has surfaced in Cuttack, where a 32-year-old woman has lodged a complaint against a private hospital, claiming that she suffered a serious internal injury during treatment.
The complaint, lodged at the Mangalabag Police Station, names five individuals — including the hospital owner and three doctors — for allegedly mishandling a medical procedure. It has prompted the Commissionerate Police to launch an investigation into the incident.
According to the news reports, the woman underwent an abortion at the Cuttack-based hospital on May 1. While she was discharged shortly after the procedure, she began experiencing severe abdominal pain within days. Her husband, a 35-year-old Army personnel stationed in Jammu & Kashmir, took her to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar for further evaluation. It was during this examination, she was allegedly informed that a portion of her rectum had been cut.

Speaking to TOI, the husband said, “A CT scan revealed a 3cm cut in her intestine, apparently caused during the abortion procedure. We nearly lost her due to the complications. She remained under observation for over 15 days at the Bhubaneswar hospital."
According to Prameya News, in response to the complaint, police have seized the patient’s admission and medical documents from the hospital. Commissionerate Police have also sought the formation of a special medical team to examine the case. A formal request has been sent to the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) of Cuttack to constitute a panel for a thorough investigation into the medical procedures followed.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Girija Shankar Chakraborty confirmed that the investigation is underway and will proceed based on expert medical findings. Speaking to TOI, he said, "We are gathering preliminary evidence, including CCTV footage from the hospital premises. The chief district medical and public health officer has been asked to form a medical team for an independent investigation."
