Family Protests After Pregnant Woman Dies at Govt Hospital in Tiruvarur

Trichy: The death of a 27-year-old pregnant woman at Thiruthuraipoondi Government Hospital has sparked protests by her family, with allegations that her death resulted from the absence of doctors at the time of admission.

The deceased, a 27-year-old woman who was two months pregnant and married to a construction worker, reportedly complained of severe pain on Wednesday evening, prompting her husband and family members to rush her to Thiruthuraipoondi Government Hospital.

According to her relatives, no doctor was available when she arrived, and only nurses attended to her until a doctor reached the hospital. Soon after, the attending doctor informed the family that the woman had passed away.

Shocked by her sudden death, her family staged a sit-in protest inside the hospital premises. Police intervened, assuring them that action would be taken, and the woman’s body was sent to Tiruvarur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

On Thursday, her relatives protested again in front of the Tiruvarur district collectorate and demanded suitable compensation for the family and a government job. They submitted a petition at the collectorate in this regard, reports TOI.

Meanwhile, the incident has sparked concern over the availability of medical staff in government hospitals during emergencies.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that doctors at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) were accused of medical negligence following the death of a 32-year-old pregnant woman who developed complications after undergoing an emergency Caesarean section. The deceased woman’s family claimed that improper stitching during surgery led to leakage from the surgical site, alleging that trainee doctors handled her case instead of experts, causing complications and eventually her death. They also alleged that she became pregnant despite having undergone a sterilisation procedure earlier and accused the doctors of negligence in handling her case.
