Delhi AIIMS to lease hostels near institute for students, resident doctors

New Delhi: Addressing long-pending demands of students and resident doctors, the premiere health institute, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi has decided to provide temporary accommodations to students and resident doctors until they are assigned hostels.

The institute has announced that the accommodation will be arranged near the institute or at locations with connectivity to the Delhi metro. The accommodations include fully furnished houses, flats and guest houses.

Students and doctors who have been waiting for hostel accommodation for a long time will get proper facilities and services at their temporary accommodations.

According to the officials, the students and doctors will be provided proper security to ensure their safety at the new accommodations and will get access to a properly maintained hygienic place to stay.

Additionally, fixed or on-demand meals, laundry services and other basic conveniences should be available.

The institute has scheduled to float an expression of interest (EOI) for the accommodations by July 31, 2023, and has also approached public sector undertakings to explore the possibility of utilising spare capacities in their guest houses or transit accommodations near the institute.

Following this, the institute has asked interested candidates to submit proposals for the EOI.

Thanking the director for this initiative, the Resident Doctors Association's president Dr Vinay Kumar said this was a long-pending demand of students.

Talking about the problems that the students are facing, Officials from the institute informed TOI, "The institute recognises the challenges of its undergraduate, post-graduate, PhD students and resident doctors who need suitable accommodation while waiting for hostel allotments. Particularly, women students/resident doctors encounter difficulties. They often commute during odd hours using their means of transport."

Director of AIIMS, Dr M Srinivas, said, "The purpose behind this move is to explore the availability of hostel accommodation that offers similar amenities to those provided in the AIIMS hostels."
