Delhi cabinet approves 250-bed trauma block at GTB Hospital
New Delhi: The Delhi government has approved the construction of a 250-bed super-speciality cum trauma block at Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Hospital in Dilshad Garden under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Wednesday.
The decision to establish the trauma block at GTB Hospital, one of the largest hospitals in the capital, was taken at a Delhi Cabinet meeting chaired by Rekha Gupta on Tuesday.
The facility, estimated to cost Rs 244.87 crore, is expected to be ready by 2028, according to a Delhi CMO statement. It will have 77 critical-care beds, nine high-tech operation theatres and 48 OPD (outdoor patients department) rooms in a seven-storey building, it said, reports PTI.

Gupta said the proposed trauma centre will ensure 24x7 emergency, diagnostic and surgical facilities under one roof for critical accident cases.
The new block will be constructed within the existing GTB Hospital campus located in East Delhi's Dilshad Garden area, eliminating the need to purchase additional land. The facility will be constructed under Phase-IV of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), the statement said.
The PMSSY is a central government scheme for developing modern and improved medical facilities in government hospitals. The centre and the concerned state governments jointly bear the cost of projects under the scheme.
"GTB Hospital is the only major government hospital in East Delhi and continues to face a heavy patient load. Almost all its beds remain occupied. In view of this, there was a need to expand modern trauma facilities for accident victims and critical emergency cases," the chief minister said.
Spread over around 22,550 square metres, the seven-storeyed trauma block will comprise a basement, ground floor and six upper floors. The facility will have 250 beds, 48 specialist OPD rooms and nine modern operation theatres.
The basement will house a blood bank and laboratory, and the ground floor will have a 24x7 emergency department along with diagnostic facilities such as CT scan, MRI and X-ray.
A 72-bed ICU will be located on the second floor, while the fourth and fifth floors will have 175 general and private ward beds. The sixth floor will house offices, classrooms and a laboratory for the training of doctors, the Delhi CMO statement said.
Of the 250 beds, 20 will be for emergency care, five for the burns ICU, 70 for ICU care, four for isolation, 22 for pre- and post-surgery care, 102 for general wards and 25 private rooms.
The facility will offer various specialist services, including neurology, orthopaedics, dermatology and dental care. A total of 77 critical-care beds will be available for critically ill patients.
The new block will bring together all essential facilities, from emergency care and diagnostics to intensive care and surgery, in an integrated manner. This will expand East Delhi's capacity to treat serious accident and emergency cases, Gupta added.
A committee comprising senior officials from the central and Delhi governments will be constituted to monitor the project. The committee will meet every three months to review the progress of construction, she said.
