Doctors at UP Hospital perform microvascular surgery for tongue reconstruction on 56-year-old patient
Lucknow: For the first time, doctors at the Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute performed a microvascular surgery for tongue reconstruction with a free radial artery forearm flap.
Resection of the primary tumour was done by Dr Indu Shukla, Assistant Professor, ENT and plastic and reconstructive surgery was performed by Dr Mukta Verma, Assistant Professor, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
A 56-year-old male patient had come with complaints of non-healing ulcers and pain at the left lateral border of the tongue for about four months.
His histopathology came out to be moderately differentiated Squamous cell carcinoma and he was diagnosed as a case of cancer tongue.
He was operated on April 27. The tongue was reconstructed with the help of a free radial artery forearm flap (microvascular technique). The patient is a known case of diabetes mellitus type 2 and he is also suffering from chronic liver disease.
The doctors said that the patient had now recovered and the surgery was successful.

The patient had undergone treatment for the tumour earlier in his home country, but unfortunately, the tumour continued to grow in spite of three consecutive surgeries. When the patient arrived at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, the tumour had grown to an enormous size of 15x20 cm, covering the entire left side of his face, making it disfigured and difficult for him to eat or drink. The expert team of oncologists, Dr Athira Ramakrishnan, Consultant ENT - Head & Neck Surgery, and Dr Sushma Mehta, Consultant - Maxillofacial and Head & Neck Surgery led by Dr Sandeep Nayak, Senior Director – Surgical Oncology, Robotic & Laparoscopic Oncology at Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta examined the patient and devised a surgical plan to remove the tumour and reconstruct the jawbone using a free fibula flap (a technique of filling a bony hole in the jaw).
