Medical Negligence Alleged as Nagapattinam Student Dies During Treatment

Tiruchirapalli: Allegations of medical negligence have surfaced at a private hospital in Nagapattinam following the death of a 16-year-old who passed away while undergoing treatment on Wednesday.

According to the news reports, the deceased, Santhosh, a Class XI student and the son of Veeramani from Kurichi village near Velankanni, was admitted to the private hospital following complaints of severe abdominal pain. Despite medical intervention, he passed away during treatment.

Anguished over the loss, the deceased’s parents and relatives refused to accept his body and staged a road blockade, demanding action against the hospital. The protesters claimed that improper medical treatment was responsible for their boy’s death.

Following the information, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ramachandramoorthy and Inspector Vembarasi led a police team to the spot and held talks with the agitating relatives. After prolonged negotiations, the protesters were pacified, reports the Hindu.

Based on a complaint lodged by the deceased patient’s father, the police have registered a case and launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death. The body was sent to Orathur Government Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

This incident has once again raised concerns about patient safety and medical standards in private healthcare facilities in the region.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that, holding a doctor and a city-based hospital liable for medical negligence, the North Chennai District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission recently asked them to jointly pay Rs 10 lakh compensation to a woman whose child died after suffering medical complications during birth. The complaints were filed by a couple hailing from Kodungaiyur, who consulted the concerned doctor and the hospital from the same locality during the woman's pregnancy for prenatal care and diagnosis.
