Fire breaks out at cardiac Care Unit of M S Ramaiah Hospital; patient dies, family alleges negligence
Bengaluru: A fire broke out in the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) on the first floor of M S Ramaiah Medical College Hospital in Mathikere, Bengaluru on Thursday. The blaze, believed to be caused by a short circuit, was quickly noticed by the staff, who promptly evacuated patients to safety.
Three fire tenders were rushed to the spot, officials said.
A 34-year-old resident of Kerala was reportedly killed in the fire accident. Family members allege that he died from smoke inhalation due to the fire.
Hospital authorities, however, have denied any injuries or fatalities due to the fire. "A minor fire broke out at the Cardiac Care Unit on the first floor of the hospital, reports Mathrubhumi.
According to the PTI report, “A minor fire broke out at the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) on the first floor of the hospital. Four patients who were admitted in the CCU were immediately evacuated and shifted to safety. No patient or staff member was injured in the fire,” a senior fire and emergency services department official said.
According to a media report in the Deccan Herald, the wife of the deceased patient, Panicker Sujay Sujathan, suggested that the fire broke out "due to the negligence of the hospital authorities". She has filed a police complaint and sought action against the hospital management.
Sadashivanagar police have opened an FIR under BNS Section 106 (causing death due to negligence).
According to her, Sujay was admitted to the hospital on September 1 for the treatment of pneumonia, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and H1N1, and was recovering well. She added that she learnt about her husband's death around 4.30 pm.

She stated that the hospital has not taken any action to hold those responsible for the incident accountable.
Sujay's brother Sujin said, "My brother was moved out of the ward around 1.50 pm. He was the last one to be moved out. He had recovered yesterday and doctors had said he would be okay today, but now they are saying it was natural death."
“The patients are safe. All of them have been evacuated. The fire didn’t cause any injuries to anyone. It’s the first time something like this happened and we suspect it must have been due to a short circuit,” said a hospital official, news agency PTI reported.
