Four Pimpri-Chinchwad Hospital staff accused of siphoning Rs 9.25 lakh

Pimpri-Chinchwad: Four staff members at a Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC)-run hospital have been accused of manipulating billing records and siphoning off lakhs of rupees, officials said on Wednesday.
According to news reports, the alleged irregularities were uncovered at Prabhakar Malhar Kute Memorial Hospital during a routine verification process.
The accused issued inflated bills for patients while recording lower amounts on carbon copies, enabling them to pocket the difference without immediate detection. Preliminary findings indicate that one permanent employee and three contractual staff were involved, siphoning off around Rs 9.25 lakh over a period of time, said officials.

Following the discovery, PCMC authorities conducted inspections at other civic hospitals and found a similar pattern of suspected financial misconduct at a hospital in Bhosari. A detailed audit is currently underway to determine the extent of the irregularities.
Dr. Laxman Gophane, chief medical officer of PCMC, confirmed the development and said that further action will be taken based on the inquiry report. “A detailed inquiry is in progress, and a report will be submitted to the general administration department. Action will be taken as per the findings,” he said, reports Hindustan Times.
This is not an isolated case. In December 2024, staff at Jijamata Hospital were found to be involved in a fraud where a significant portion of patient payments was not deposited in official accounts. Similarly, in November 2023, a contractual employee at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital used fabricated receipts to misappropriate funds by underreporting collections.
