Goa Medical College introduces 3D virtual anatomy platform for medical education

The newly acquired Anatomage Table will allow medical students and faculty to explore human anatomy through interactive virtual dissection, 3D visualisation and imaging-based learning.
Panaji: Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) has introduced an advanced three-dimensional virtual anatomy platform to strengthen the teaching of human anatomy to medical students and healthcare professionals.
The newly acquired Anatomage Table provides a life-size, interactive digital model of the human body and is designed to complement conventional cadaveric dissection.
The initiative aims to address some of the challenges associated with traditional anatomy teaching, including the limited availability of donated bodies and exposure to chemical preservatives such as formaldehyde. The digital platform uses digitised human cadavers and high-resolution medical imaging data, allowing users to study anatomical structures without chemical exposure or physical tissue damage.
Speaking to O Heraldo, Dr Dhaval Faterpenkar, Nodal Officer of IT and E-governance at GMC, said, “GMC is strengthening its medical education infrastructure with the introduction of the Anatomage Table, an advanced three-dimensional virtual anatomy and digital dissection platform designed to enhance the teaching and learning of human anatomy”.
The Anatomage Table features a life-size digital representation of human anatomy that students and faculty can explore interactively. Users can examine structures in multiple planes and study the body layer by layer through virtual dissection, allowing detailed visualisation of anatomical relationships.
The facility is expected to complement conventional anatomy teaching, including cadaveric dissection, by allowing students to repeatedly examine complex structures and develop a better understanding of their three-dimensional relationships.
The platform also has applications beyond undergraduate anatomy education. It can support postgraduate teaching and academic instruction in several clinical disciplines, including Surgery, Radiology, Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery and ENT. The technology can further help students and faculty correlate anatomical structures with clinical imaging, including CT and MRI-based visualisation.
According to Dr Faterpenkar, the Anatomage Table will provide faculty with an additional tool for demonstrations, case-based teaching, interactive learning and academic presentations.
While introducing newer educational tools, the institution will continue to retain the importance of traditional hands-on medical education, with the Anatomage Table serving as a complementary resource for anatomy teaching and learning.
